About us

The Bulleen-Templestowe Basketball Club Inc (known on court as the Bulleen Boomers) has been operating in the Bulleen, Templestowe and surrounding suburbs of outer-eastern Melbourne for over 40 proud years.

Our club provides an extensive platform for officials and players of all ages to realise their potential and excel at all levels of basketball. Junior participation begins with training programs, clinics, tournaments and leagues designed to empower young players to achieve, as they are given opportunities to progress their skills and dedication to the game, leading to taking the court at the senior, elite level.

The Bulleen Boomers have successfully attracted large numbers of younger players to basketball. In the early years, our coaches focus on developing fundamental skills, fostering understanding of important rules and some simple, but effective game strategies. Our club is committed to making sure that sport is a fun and enjoyable experience for all who take part and ‘being a good sport’ is just as important as the result at the end of the game.

We provide teams for both male and female players aged from 5-20 years old with approximately 1,400 players competing in the Eastern Districts Junior Basketball Association (EDJBA) Saturday domestic competition.

Our Junior Championship program, provides teams for up to 430 players competing in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) Friday night competitions giving our talented juniors the chance to represent Bulleen at the state level in competing against other Clubs from right across Melbourne and surrounding rural areas.

Our first teams have given many players the opportunity to compete for State Championships and also to represent Bulleen at the national level in tournaments such as the Under 14 Club Nationals and the National Junior Classic. Boomers junior teams have been awarded many titles throughout our club’s history and we are very proud of our outstanding achievements given the scale of our club. Our Junior Championship players range from 10 to 19 years old across an equal spread of boys and girls teams.

Our Senior Championship program provides teams to compete in the Victorian Big V competition and we enter teams in the mens and womens Championship and Youth League divisions. To be eligible for selection into the Senior Championship program, our players usually progress through the ranks of the our Junior Championship program.

The Bulleen Boomers have also been a member of the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) since 1978, giving our Senior Championship Women’s program players the chance to compete in this elite national competition. Our WNBL team was finally rewarded for all its hard work by winning the WNBL title in 2011, our Club’s first ever WNBL Championship.

Since it began, our WNBL program has been the launchpad for our most talented female players with many going on to represent Australia on the international stage. Our 2011 Championship winning team boasted 5 players who went on to be selected for the Opals squad (Liz Cambage, Elyse Penaluna, Hanna Zavecz, Rachel Jarry and Jenna O’Hea),  with Cambage, O’Hea and Jarry also being drafted into the WNBA, the most prestigous basketball competition in the world.

Our club has many mid week competitions for men and woman of all ages and capabilities to enjoy a game of social basketball for fitness and fun. Games times are Monday – Thursday evenings, Friday mornings and a Sunday evening.

Our main stadium is located in Sheahans Road, Bulleen and is the subject of a redevelopment proposal currently before the Manningham Council. The improvement plan being proposed includes 2-3 additional courts and an upgrade of existing facilities. Games are also played out of the Manningham-Templestowe Leisure Centre on the corner of Anderson and Foote Streets (known as Templestowe Leisure Centre (TLC)).

We also hire court time on a regular basis for training and games at the Veneto Club Bulleen, Carey Baptist Grammar Bulleen, Whitefriars College, Templestowe College, Donvale Sports Complex (DISC) and several primary school courts around Manningham.

At the Bulleen Boomers, we are extremely proud of our history within the City of Manngingham and of our many achievements on the basketball court at all levels of competition – local, state and national. We are an integral part of our local communities and very thankful for the support of our players, parents and friends and their ongoing contributions to our Club.
