Junior Championship or Representative basketball is a competition for boys and girls in age groups from Under 12 through to Under 20. The competition (VJBL) is organised by Basketball Victoria and played on Friday nights.
The Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) in which the Boomers play is an elite competition, where players will have the opportunity to represent Bulleen against other associations under the umbrella of Basketball Victoria and receive coaching from a mixture of established and some of Victoria’s brightest up and coming coaches. The representative program is for players who are committed to developing their basketball skills and knowledge of the game.
More About the VJBL
All players in a team at representative level have an important role to play, and due to the nature of the competition players are not guaranteed equal court time. Some determining factors for court time are a player’s attitude towards their teammates and their coach, their skill level, their willingness to listen, their commitment and the continual improvement required across the season.
The Boomers home games are held at Mullum Mullum Stadium and East Doncaster Secondary College.
As a club Bulleen currently enter around 45 junior championship teams. In addition, it fields Senior Men’s and Women’s teams in the BIG V.
In the VJBL competition there are two tiers of competition:
1. Victorian Junior Championship – known as ‘VC’, is the highest level at which junior teams can play. Only 20 teams across the state make this division.
2. Victorian Junior League – VJL1, VJL2, VJL3, VJL4, etc. There are usually 10 teams per VJL division.

The panel of coaches meet after the end of the tryout and openly discuss the players who attended. The Director of Coaching has the final say on selections.

Tryout Attendance
To maximise the likelihood of selection for a representative team, athletes are strongly encouraged to attend as many tryout sessions as possible. Each session provides valuable opportunities for coaches to assess skills, teamwork, and consistency, key factors in the selection process.
Regular attendance also demonstrates commitment and allows athletes the best opportunity, which is particularly important when competition for places is high.
U20 Tryouts will be scheduled shortly, which will be announced at a later date.

Frequently Asked Questions
Representative basketball in the VJBL (Victorian Junior Basketball League) is a higher level of competition where players represent their basketball club against other clubs across Victoria. Unlike domestic basketball, which is more social and local, rep basketball is more competitive and requires players to try out for a team. Games are played on Friday nights during the season, and teams train once or twice a week. It’s a great opportunity for players who are passionate about basketball and want to develop their skills at a more advanced level.
Any junior player aged 10 to 20 years old (Under 12s to Under 21s) can register for tryouts. Players typically have experience in domestic basketball and are looking to challenge themselves at a higher level.
Rep players train 1–2 times per week and play games on Friday nights during the VJBL season (February to September). There may also be weekend tournaments and extra training sessions.
Rep basketball is more competitive, with a stronger focus on skill development, teamwork, and performance. It involves playing against teams from across Victoria, not just from the local area.
No, court time in rep basketball is not equal. Coaches make decisions based on effort, performance, and team needs. The program prepares players for high-level competition.
